Courtney Steinbock was appointed as the Head Women's Tennis Coach at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) on August 28. With over 30 years of tennis experience, she led UIW to a 9-12 overall record in her first season, achieving notable wins against the New Jersey Institute of Technology and McNeese State University. The team made it to the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament. Before joining UIW, Steinbock coached at the University of Arkansas, where she helped a doubles team reach an ITA ranking of No. 8, and at the University of Houston, leading the team to a 20-4 record in 2018. She also had successful stints as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Wichita State, and Washington State, contributing to numerous program advancements and accolades. A Lubbock, Texas native, Steinbock played for the University of Kansas, earning team MVP honors and First Team All-Big XII accolades.

Meet Jonas, a Tennis Coach in Windcrest, Texas.

Jonas Andersson was hired as the men's tennis coach at UIW in May, 2017. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Andersson was a tennis professional at West End Racquet Club in Torrance, California. In his sixth season, Andersson led his team to an 18-4 overall record and an undefeated 4-0 mark in conference play. The Cardinals entered the Southland Conference tournament as regular season champs. UIW made it to the conference championship, but fell to NJIT 4-3. Six athletes earned All-Conference recognition and five were named to the All-Conference Academic team. Emilio Vila was named Newcomer of the Year and Tomas Reche was named Student-Athlete of the Year. In 2023, he led the team to a 13-9 record while also leading the team to the second round of the Southland Conference Tournament after defeating UIC in round one. Noah De Luna capped off his regular season by being named to the Southland Men's Tennis All-Conference first team at No. 6 singles. In 2022, he won his second regular season conference title winning a sharing of the title as tri-champions. That season tennis placed four student-athletes on the SLC All-Conference teams. In 2019, he led the team to the No. 3 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament. Three student-athletes earned All-Southland Conference honors on the year. In his first season as head coach, he led the team to a regular season Southland Conference title, the first Division I title in program history. His incredible work in his first season got him named Southland Conference Coach of the Year. He also led UIW Men's Tennis to earn 12 postseason honors in 2018. Andersson is no stranger to the university, as he played tennis for three years during which time he won three national championships, becoming the first and only UIW athlete to win a national title. In 1994 he was the Rolex men’s doubles national champion, and in 1995 he won the NAIA National Singles Championship and teamed with Javier Ruiz to win the NAIA National Doubles Championship. He was an NAIA All-American in both 1995 and 1996. He received his bachelor’s of business administration degree from UIW in the spring of 1997. Jonas continued to win national championships since leaving UIW. He won two national titles, including the 2004 men’s USTA 5.0 team title and the 2004 mixed USTA 10.0 team crown. Leonard Ivic, a native of Split, Croatia, was a standout junior tennis player, earning a place among his country's top ranks by age 18. He represented Croatia in the European Junior Davis Cup, leading his team to victory, and was crowned Croatian National Champion at 16. In 2007, Leonard was ranked No. 3 in Europe, winning multiple European tournaments and an ITF title. He also competed in professional ATP events, achieving a World Ranking of No. 1649. Ivic moved to the U.S. to continue his academic and athletic journey, playing for Laredo Community College and helping his team win the American National Championship. He later transferred to the University of the Incarnate Word, where he played in the No. 1 position and excelled academically, earning a Bachelor's in International Business and a Master's in Marketing with a Minor in Kinesiology. With over twenty-five years of competitive tennis experience, Chris played for Churchill High School and later received a tennis scholarship to Temple Junior College, where he achieved a national ranking of 23 and helped his team win the conference during his sophomore year. Now, as a dedicated coach, he shares his knowledge and expertise with aspiring players, including his son, who is currently playing varsity tennis at Churchill High School, continuing the family legacy in the sport.

Cardo Walthall hails from a prominent lineage of tennis professionals in San Antonio. His grandfather, Paschal “Bub” Walthall, founded the San Antonio Tennis Association (SATA), and the Alamo City Open is named in his honor due to his significant contributions to the sport in the area. Growing up immersed in tennis, Cardo's father, Richard Walthall, directed tennis programs at various clubs, including Northern Hills, Thousand Oaks, and Sonterra Country Club. Cardo attended Alamo Heights High School, where he played a pivotal role in securing three State Championship titles in 1995, 1996, and 1998. He then pursued higher education at Texas A&M University in College Station, where he served as the Head Yell Leader for the university and the Corps of Cadets, in addition to participating in the Governor of Texas’ honor guard as a Ross Volunteer. After graduating, Cardo returned to San Antonio, where he continues to compete in tennis and cherishes the camaraderie that the sport has fostered throughout his life.

Meet Ryan, a Tennis Coach in Windcrest, Texas.

Ryan Takao is in his third season as the head coach of the Trinity Tigers women's tennis team, where he has successfully guided the team to a 22-19 dual-match record and a spot in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship match. Under his leadership, players have consistently qualified for the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships. Before taking the head coaching position in 2009, Coach Takao served as an assistant coach for twelve years, during which he contributed to Trinity's NCAA national championship victory in 2000. A Trinity alumnus, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Humanities in 1996 and was a four-year letterman on the men's tennis team, helping lead the Tigers to three consecutive SCAC titles. He earned All-SCAC Team honors twice and was instrumental in securing four NCAA postseason appearances. Growing up in San Antonio, Coach Takao played for Theodore Roosevelt High School, where he was the No. 1 singles and doubles player for his final three years. He reached the Class 5A Region round of 16 in singles in 1990 and 1991 and achieved regional success in doubles with his brother Mikey in 1992. In recognition of his sportsmanship, he received the Boys 18's Texas Super Championship Art Faust Sportsmanship Award in 1991 and 1992. The Takao family was also honored as the San Antonio Family of the Year by the San Antonio Tennis Association in 1989. Ryan achieved the highest junior ranking of 11th in Texas and was ranked as the No. 1 doubles team in the state with his father in 1990. A certified United States Professional Tennis Association instructor, Coach Takao continues to teach in San Antonio, sharing his extensive knowledge and passion for the sport.

A San Antonio native, Adrian graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1990 and went on to play NCAA Division I tennis at Texas State University under Head Coach Neal Kinlund. He was the Bobcats' #1 singles player, earning the T-Association Award for his achievements as a student-athlete. In his senior year, he captured several singles titles, fueling his post-college aspirations. From 1995 to 1997, he competed on the Pro Satellite Tour while also pursuing his Master’s and Teaching Certification at Texas State. He later became a Tennis Director at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch, coaching top national and Texas juniors, many of whom have gone on to earn college scholarships. With over 30 years of teaching and 33 years of competitive experience, Adrian holds the record for the longest #1 Men’s Open Singles ranking in Texas from 2002 to 2017. He has won every Open-level USTA tournament in Texas and achieved top national rankings in singles in 2001 and 2002. Adrian is deeply committed to giving back to the San Antonio community, especially to disadvantaged kids. He has introduced hundreds of children to tennis through programs like the Tennis-on-Wheels initiative and the San Antonio Tennis Academy. His teaching expertise lies in technical stroke production, sports psychology, and physical fitness. As a player-coach, Adrian emphasizes hard work as the key to success. Meet Marco, a Tennis Coach in Windcrest, Texas.

Marco graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 2000, where he earned a Super Champ ranking in Texas. He continued his tennis career at Laredo Junior College, a top-ranked NJCAA program, from 2000 to 2002, where he qualified for nationals in both singles and doubles. Marco later contributed to Laredo JC’s success by coaching the team to a National Championship. He then played at Cameron University, earning degrees in Mathematics and Physical Education. From 2003 to 2017, Marco consistently ranked among the top 8 in Texas' Men’s Open Division and held the #1 spot in Texas Mixed Open Doubles from 2009 to 2013. With extensive experience coaching in the San Antonio area, Marco has worked with a wide range of players—from beginners to elite national college champions—developing a solid teaching foundation that covers everything from fundamentals to advanced strategy. Marco’s passion for coaching led him to high school tennis, where he is currently the head coach at Clark High School. He is dedicated to improving his team’s performance, aiming for a top-20 state ranking and a spot in the UIL State competition. Marco’s expertise and diverse teaching methods make him a valuable asset to the Academy, where he continues to inspire and lead by example.

Meet Alessia, a Tennis Coach in Windcrest, Texas.

I am currently a member of the women's tennis team at St. Mary's University, a nationally ranked Division II team and multiple-time winner of the LSC tournament and Regionals. My background includes playing tennis in Europe and competing in ITF Juniors. I also have two years of experience in coaching and teaching tennis, making me an excellent sparring partner.

I am currently a graduate assistant for St. Mary’s women’s tennis team. My duties include leading group and one-on-one practices, plan drills to improve my player’s skills, mentor and educate them, oversee the inventory, maintain the equipment such as stringing rackets, travel to tennis tournaments and games.

Meet Bill, a Tennis Coach in Windcrest, Texas.

Bill Macom, Director of Tennis at St. Mary’s, is entering his sixth season in 2024-25. Under his leadership, both the men’s and women’s tennis teams have achieved significant success, including two Lone Star Conference Tournament titles, a regular season title, and four NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2023-24, he earned his 600th career win, and Selina Wu was named Freshman/Rookie of the Year in the Lone Star Conference and South Central Region. Macom's teams have consistently excelled academically, earning ITA All-Academic honors for 13 consecutive years. Several players have earned prestigious awards, including the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. Previously, Macom coached at Florida Tech and Jacksonville University, leading teams to NCAA Regionals and earning the 2015 USPTA Florida College Coach of the Year award. He has a long history of tennis leadership, coaching, and playing experience.

Meet Angela, a Tennis Coach in Windcrest, Texas.

Angela Vargas begins her second season as an assistant tennis coach in 2024-25 after putting together one of the best careers in St. Mary's history on the courts. Vargas was a two-time Lone Star All-Conference selection, including the 2022 Newcomer of the Year and the 2022 LSC Tournament MVP as a junior. She was named to the LSC All-Tournament Team again in 2023, helping lead the Rattlers to back-to-back conference tournament titles. She earned ITA South Central Region Most Improved Senior and was a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete for the Gold and Blue. Posted a 40-8 record in singles duals over her two years with the Rattlers and was 21-15 in doubles duals. Prior to St. Mary's, Vargas spent two years playing at Southern Arkansas, rewriting the record books for the Muleriders. She posted a combined record of 62-31, with a 36-13 singles record and a 26-18 mark in doubles, was the 2019 GAC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-Conference and won the conference title at Flight 2. She ended tied for second in school history in singles wins and second in doubles wins, as well as third in winning percentage, combined victories, singles winning percentage and doubles winning percentage
